Banking Exams Overview

Banking has emerged as one of the most challenging sectors in the country. Openings are available at various levels, from Bank Clerical to Probationary Officers (PO). There is great job security and the salary is very good, besides the perquisites of loans for employees. It is a lucrative career: till recently careers existed only in nationalized banks, but with liberalization, a host of private banks have been set up. As a result, demand for trained professionals has increased substantially. The private banks offer better salaries but then the job security is also less.

Bank PO

Bank Probationary Officer (PO) is a good profile post in any bank. Candidates can be recruited as bank PO after clearing the Bank PO Exam conducted by the respected bank. So it all depends on the performance in the exam, the better you perform, higher is the probability to cut through the competition.
Since, there is no specific task for a PO, therefore a PO can be asked to do anything till the completion of probation period. One the employee has been confirmed with the job he/she can be given the routine work like posting, passing, scrolling or advances or anything that is related to banking. There are many jobs for a PO. Almost all the banks all over India require a Probationary officer. So the future aspects to be a PO are too good for a youth. Students interested in Banking must try for a Probationary Officer.
Probationary Officer earns a good amount of salary, since there are limited seats for a PO in every bank, it is difficult to crack the PO Exam conducted by the bank.

Bank Clerical

Banks simplify people's lives, but the business of banking is anything but simple. Every transaction—from cashing a check to taking out a loan—requires careful record keeping. Behind the scenes in every bank or savings and loan association there are dozens of bank clerks, each an expert at keeping one area of the bank's business running smoothly.
New account clerks open and close accounts and answer questions for customers. Interest clerks record interest due to savings account customers, as well as the interest owed to the bank on loans and other investments. Exchange clerks, who work on international accounts, translate foreign currency values into dollars and vice versa. Loan clerks sort and record information about loans. Statement clerks are responsible for preparing the monthly balance sheets of checking account customers. Securities clerks record, file, and maintain stocks, bonds, and other investment certificates. They also keep track of dividends and interest on these certificates.
Other clerks operate the business machines on which modern banks rely. Proof operators sort checks and record the amount of each check. Bookkeeping clerks keep records of each customer's account.
In addition to these specialists, banks need general clerical help—data entry keyers, file clerks, mail handlers, and messengers—just as any other business does.

Selection Criteria

Witten Tests

It is a systematic and organized way by which a recruiter evaluates students’ abilities and skills required for a particular line of study or work. Most organizations use Aptitude Tests as a process of elimination when the number of applicants is sizeable. These Aptitude Tests also give the selectors a good idea of the candidate's reasoning ability, critical thinking ability communication skills, reaction to a particular situation and presence of mind.
The basic areas on which the banks and other organization test the candidate are:

a) Test of Reasoning
b) Quantitative Aptitude
c) English Language
d) General Awareness
e) Clerical Aptitude Test
f) Marketing and Computers
g) Descriptive Test

The various sections asked in an Aptitude Test solely depend on the organization requirement. All the above mentioned sections may not be asked in one single exam, but due to the intense competition and lucrative opportunities given by various banks, there arises the need for the student to be prepared on all areas and ready to face any of the banks test.

Group Discussions

Group Discussion exercises are designed to test the candidate's ability to act as a leader and a team player. The other qualities exhibited in such exercises are clarity of thought process, the ability to think differently and the ability to lend direction.
A GD is a process of Selection rather than Elimination. The intention is to select the best students who possess the desired skills sets including the above mentioned qualities. In a GD a group of students is asked to discuss a topic given to them.

Personal Interviews

The last leg of the selection process is usually a Personal Interview which gives the selectors an opportunity to know the candidate better and to assess the suitability of the candidate's skills to the requirements of the organization. The recruiters critically analyze the application and the student qualities like attitude, confidence, motivation levels, level of knowledge, ability to react on situations etc. The interview also helps the organization assess the cultural fit between the company and the student.
