TAMIL NADU Colleges to reopen on 3rd April 2013

CHENNAI: Ending a fortnight of silence, theTamil Nadu government has informed colleges that they can reopen on Wednesday. Colleges in the state were declared closed mid-March after students joined the protests against the alleged genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

A circular to self-financing engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University on Monday said, "The vice-chancellor after having discussions with the government of Tamil Nadu, has decided to reopen undergraduate and postgraduate classes of all engineering colleges in the state on April 3."

This includes constituent colleges of Anna University, including the Guindy College of Engineering, AC Tech, School of Architecture and Planning and Madras Institute of Technology. All government and aided engineering colleges and all self-financing engineering colleges were also asked to reopen on Wednesday.

"We received the information through Facebook and text messages. I think those who live outside the city and find it difficult to get train or bus tickets to Chennai by Wednesday will be given a few days to get back to college," said V Saravanan, student of a city engineering college.

Arts and science colleges have also asked their students to be back in class on Wednesday. Many resident students expected colleges to reopen on Monday and booked their tickets to be in town on April 1. Anna University officials have allowed out-of-station students who arrived hostels on Monday to stay there on a case-by-case basis, and have said others could start occupying hostels from Tuesday.

Engineering colleges were told that there would not be any change in the academic and regular examination schedule. Exams are scheduled to be held after May 20. The practical exams will be held before colleges close for the studyleave on May 15. "We expect to finish the syllabus despite the unexpected break as we plan to take classes on Saturdays to make up," said a faculty member of the university.

Colleges and universities have had to cancel model exams and reschedule them because of the sudden closure. Some engineering colleges reopened early last week.
