Language is our primary source of communication. It is the method through which we share our ideas and thoughts with others. Some people even say that language is what separates us from animal and makes us humans. There are thousands of languages in this world. Countries have their own national language in addition to a variety of local languages spoken and understood by their people in different regions. Some languages are spoken by millions of people, others by only a few thousand.

English is an international language. English was originally the language of England. There are several factors that make the English language essential to communication in our current time. First of all, it is the most common foreign language. This means that two people who come from different countries (for example, a Mexican and a Sweden) usually use English as a common language to communicate. That's why everyone needs to learn the language in order to get in touch on an international level. Speaking it will help you communicate with people from countries all over the world, not just English speaking ones. It is everywhere. Some 380 million people speak it as their first language and perhaps two-thirds as many again as their second. A billion are learning it, about a third of the world's population are in some sense exposed to it and by 2050, it is predicted, half the world will be more or less proficient in it. It is the language of globalisation of international business, politics and diplomacy. It is the language of computers and internet.

English is a dominant business language and it has become almost a necessity for people to speak English if they are to enter a global work-force; research from all over the world shows that cross-border business communication is most often conducted in English. English is used as the primary language such as in the UK, USA, Australia and Canada. On the other hand, English as a second language where state is multilingual like India and Singapore. English is learned everywhere because people have found out the knowledge of English is a possession for better career, better pay, advanced knowledge, and for communication with the entire world. English is also learned for the literature it possesses, and for the variety and rich experience it providers. English has replaced French as the language of diplomacy. In this computer age, English is expanding its domains of use everywhere. Everyone wants to appropriate English as their own.

Knowledge of English language has indeed acted as a powerful tool for development and advancement throughout the world, and fluency constitutes a huge step forward in many peoples and countries struggling for self-sufficiency and success. Increase in global interaction over the past century has stimulated demand for more streamlined and efficient communication across lingual borders. Thus, in the business world, companies seeking to expand multi-nationally have had to find ways to communicate across such difference in cost-effective ways. Many firms have changed their corporate language to the common tongue of English in efforts to streamline communication and avoid learning team members ‘out of the loop’.

English is the international language of science and technology and worldwide communication. English is also essential in the field of education. In many countries children are taught and encouraged to learn English as a second language. Even in countries where it is not official language, such as Netherlands or Sweden, we will find many syllabi in science and engineering are written in English. Because it is the dominant language in the science, most of the research and studies you find in any given scientific field, will be written it as well. At the university level, students in many countries study almost all their subject in English in order to make the material more accessible to international students.

Over the years, English language has become one of our principal assets in getting a global leadership for books written by Indian authors and for films made by Indians in English language.

In India, people going from North to South for education or business mostly communicate in English, which has become a link language. Keeping this in mind, the Parliament has also recognized English as an official language in addition to Hindi. All the facts of history and development in present day India underline the continued importance of learning English in addition to vernaculars.

We can make use of English to promote our worldview and spiritual heritage throughout the globe.
