1.  International Workers' Day , also called Labour Day or May Day , is being observed today. May Day originated in late 19th century when labour movement to gain the 8-hour work day began.

3.  NASA will launch its first-ever mission InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) to study the deep interior of Mars on May 5, 2018.

4.  Ministry of Drinking Water & Sanitation has launched GOBAR (Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources) – DHAN scheme at National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI) Karnal. GOBAR-DHAN Scheme aims to positively impact village cleanliness and generate wealth and energy from cattle and organic waste. It also aims at creating new rural livelihood opportunities and enhancing income for farmers and other rural people.

5.   15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas will be held in holy city if Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) from January 21 to January 23, 2019 Theme:_“Role of Indian Diaspora in building a New India ”.

6.  India is ranked joint-6th in the list of doping violations with 69 cases, same as that of Russia, according to World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) report for samples collected in 2016. Italy topped the rankings of drug cases in 2016, followed by France (86), United States (76), Australia (75), Belgium (73).

7. Indian shooter Shahzar Rizvi became the world number 1 shooter in the 10-metre air pistol category after having won a silver medal at the recently concluded shooting World Cup in South Korea.

8.  Hockey India has appointed Harendra Singh as coach of India's men's team, while Sjoerd Marijne will take over as chief coach of women's side.

9.As many as 14 Indian cities are among the 20 most polluted cities in the world in terms of PM2.5 levels, according to World Health Organisation's latest report on air quality . According to this data, India's Kanpur is the most polluted city in the world .

11. Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) has appointed former chief secretary of Karnataka, Subhash Chandra Khuntia as new chairman of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). He will succeed TS Vijayan whose 5-year term ended in February 2018.

12.  Telecom Commission approved a proposal for allowing people to make phone calls and use internet services in domestic and international flights in India, with certain riders.

13.Legendary singer Asha Bhosle was honoured with 26th PC Chandra Puraskaar for her contribution in the field of Indian music.

14.  Mr Sitanshu Ranjan Kar (1983 batch officer of Indian Information Service) took over as the 27th Principal Spokesperson of the Government of India and Director General of Press Information Bureau in New Delhi . He succeeds Mr Frank Noronha.

15. Unnayan Banka Project, an initiative by district administration of Banka, Bihar, in collaboration with mobile-based social learning platform Eckovation, has won Prime Minister’s Excellence Award for Best Innovation 2018. The project aims at providing accessibility of quality education in the government schools of Banka by using Eckovation platform.

18.  Union Cabinet approved a plan to set up 20 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and upgrade 73 medical colleges under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) , which has been extended by two years till 2020 with financial outlay of Rs.14,832 crore.

19.  India has surpassed France to become one of the world's five largest military spenders , according to Swedish arms watchdog SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) . India spent $63.9 billion on its military in 2017, an increase of 5.5%

21.  A Burson Cohn & Wolfe study revealed that PM Narendra Modi is the Most Popular World Leader on Facebook with over 43.2 million likes on his personal page.

22.Former Australian cricketer Justin Langer has been appointed as Australian cricket team's Head Coach for all three formats.

23.Today (4th May 2018) is International Firefighters' Day . It was instituted after proposal emailed out across the world on January
4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Australia.

24.  India ranked 11th in the FDI Confidence Index 2018 released by global consultancy firm A T Kearney. This is 1st time India fell out of the top 10 since 2015. India's last year (2017) rank was 8th.

25.Google's philanthropic arm Google.org has announced $3 million in grants for Teacher training and educational content creation in India. The organisation committed $1 million to TheTeacherApp to help them reach 5,00,000 teachers in two years, besides a $2-million grant and technical assistance from YouTube to the Central Square Foundation.

26.   Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved proposal for renaming and restructuring of Multi-sectoral Development Programme (MsDP) as Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK). PMJVK aims to address development deficits in identified minority concentration areas.

27.  Instagram has added an In-app payments feature as a test where users can make purchases after adding a credit or debit card with an additional pin.

28. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah named the *Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year.

29.According to the Wimbledon officials, the 2018 men's and women's singles champions will receive £2.25 million, an increase of £50,000 on last year.

31.  NITI Aayog has signed Statement of Intent (SoI) with IBM to develop crop yield prediction model using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to provide real time advisory to farmers in Aspirational Districts. 1st phase of project will focus on developing model for 10 Aspirational Districts across states of Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh.

32.  Punjab government along World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-India are conducting 1st organised census of Indus Dolphins, one of the world’s rarest mammals found only in India and Pakistan. The organised census aims at conservation of the species.

33.Former Chief Economic Adviser Ashok Lahiri has been appointed as full-time member of the 15th Finance Commission. He is at present the part-time member of the commission, headed by N.K. Singh.

34.  Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) launched initiative of online professional development of 1.5 million higher education faculty using massive open online course (MOOC) platform SWAYAM. Under its first phase of implementation, 75 discipline-specific National Resource Centres (NRCs) have been identified.

35.  Swedish Academy has decided to postpone the 2018 Nobel Prize in Literature, with the intention of awarding it in 2019. For the first time since 1949, the secretive jury will not unveil a winner this autumn.

36.  US state California’s economy has surpassed that of the UK to become the world’s 5th largest, according to new federal data released. With a GDP of $2.7 trillion, California is now only behind the US, China, Japan and Germany. The UK and India are next on the list, followed by France, Brazil and Italy respectively.

37. Manipur CM N. Biren Singh launched 'Go to Village' mission throughout the state. The mission is aimed at identifying the eligible and deserving beneficiaries in every corner of the state and delivering government services at their doorstep.

38.According to the World Bank, India is set to achieve its target of universal access to electricity before the 2030 deadline. “India is doing extremely well on electrification… About 85% of the population has access to electricity,”

54.Aiming to foster growth for India’s nascent Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) ecosystem, NITI Aayog and Google have signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to work on a range of initiatives to help build the AI ecosystem across the country.

55. India has ranked 4th out of 25 nations in the Asia-Pacific region on an index that measures their overall power. The US has topped the list. India has been pegged as a “giant of the future” .

56.  3rd edition of the United Nations Peacekeeping Course for African Partners (UNPCAP) was inaugurated in New Delhi. The course is being conducted by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping in India (CUNPK) in partnership with the United States.

Initially, it will be taken up on priority in 39 districts with more than 50% tribal population and then gradually will be expanded to other Tribal Districts across the country.

60.US-based retail giant Walmart has confirmed that it will buy 77% stake in India's largest e-commerce startup Flipkart for $16 billion.The acquisition, which is the largest e-commerce deal in the world, will value the homegrown startup at a reported amount of $20.8 billion.

61.  UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced to hold a climate summit in September 2019 in New York to review the commitments of the 2015 Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

66. International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its Asia and Pacific Regional Economic Outlook report has reaffirmed that India will be the fastest growing major economy in 2018, with growth rate of 7.4% and 7.8% in 2019.

67. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved green licence plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private e-vehicles and yellow for taxis to promote electric vehicles (e-vehicles) in India.

68.Indian Army’s month long Vijay Prahar exercise concluded in Suratgarh, Rajasthan. It was conducted by South Western Command of Indian Army. 80.Nobel laureate and noted economist Muhammad Yunus was honored with the 11th KISS Humanitarian Award 2018 at a function held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Yunus is the founder of Grameen Bank and is known as the Father of Microfinance.

81.Leading vaccine maker Bharat Biotech has received the National Technology Award 2018 from the Central government's Technology Development Board for its Rotavac vaccine .

82.  Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has put Dena Bank under prompt corrective action (PCA) framework. It has barred Dena Bank from extending fresh credit in view of deteriorating financial health due to mounting non-performing assets (NPAs) and mounting losses. It makes Dena Bank 1st lender to face curbs on lending under PCA framework.

83.  PM Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli jointly inaugurated direct bus service between Janakpur (Nepal) and Ayodhya (India). Both are sacred cities for Hindus and bus service was launched as part of India’s Ramayan Circuit under Swadesh Darshan Scheme to promote religious tourism in Nepal and India.

84.  Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tourism Ministers’ conference was held in Wuhan, China. 85.  Bangladesh’s first communication satellite Bangabandhu-1 will be launched by SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39A. It is designed to provide wide range of broadcast and communication services throughout Bangladesh.

87. Supreme Court has approved the ' Compensation Scheme for Women Victims, Survivors of Sexual Assault, Other Crimes-2018 '. According to this scheme, a victim of gangrape in any part of the country would now get a minimum compensation of Rs 5 lakh up to a maximum of Rs 10 lakh . The scheme provides minimum compensation of 7 lakh in cases of acid attacks.

88.  Maharashtra government signed an MoU with the Centres Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) Council to train state PWD officials to rate government buildings .

89.  Kerala State Electricity Board has signed an MoU with the National Thermal Power Corporation for increasing solar power generation in the state.

90.A sum of Rs 16,500 crore has been earmarked by 71 ministries and departments of the central government for implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) in 2018-19 .

91. Punjab government signed a pact with the UK for setting up of bio-gas and bio-CNG plants in the state.

98.  A parliamentary panel headed by veteran BJP leader Murali Manohar Joshi decided to study the recovery of black money and performance of public sector banks (PSBs) among a host of subjects. The 30-member Estimates Committee, in a meeting, decided to study a host of subjects related to various ministries in the year 2018-19.

99.  United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is going to set up skill development centre for clients of Bharosa, an integrated support centre for distressed women and children in Hyderabad, Telangana. This initiative is aimed at empowering vulnerable and marginalised women by imparting skills training.

100.  Union Government is going to link additional 200 wholesale mandis to online trading platform eNAM (electronic National Agriculture Market) this fiscal (2018-19) and also encourage inter-mandi transactions. At present, 585 regulated mandis in 14 states are linked with the eNAM.

101.Today (15th May) is International Day of Families . The Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. Theme:_ “Families and inclusive societies”

104. Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) run by an all-woman team began its operations Phagwara , Punjab. This kendra was 192nd POPSK in the country and 1st one to be operated by an all-woman team.

105.  Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) , a top state-run Chinese bank has launched China’s 1st India-dedicated publicly offered investment fund . The fund has been named as Industrial and Commercial Bank Credit Suisse India Market Fund

106.The founder of Sulabh International, Dr Bindeshwar Pathak was honoured with the Nikkei Asia Prize in Japan for his contribution to Asia’s development.

107.  Union government today announced that it has initiated action for removal of Allahabad Bank CEO Usha Ananthasubramanian following the CBI's 1st chargesheet in the $2 billion fraud at PNB detailing her role.

109.According to recently released report by Mercom Communications, India emerged as 3rd largest solar market in world in 2017 behind China and United States. India has set new record with 9.6 GW of solar installations in 2017, which was more than double the 4.3 GW installed in 2016.

110. World Health Organization (WHO) has launched comprehensive plan “REPLACE” to eliminate industrially-produced artificial trans-fats from global food supply by 2023. The elimination of trans-fats is key to protecting health and saving lives.
REPLACE is abbreviated in six strategic actions as Review, Promote, Legislate, Assess, Create awareness and Enforce.

111.According to Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), the subscriber base of Atal Pension Yojana (APY) has crossed 1 crore subscribers mark since its launch in May 2015. 227.  India and the World Bank signed a $500 million loan agreement to provide additional financing for the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) Rural Roads Project, implemented by Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India, which will build 7,000 km of climate resilient roads, out of which 3,500 km will be constructed using green technologies.

228.  Indian Oil Corporation has emerged as India's most profitable state-owned company for the 2nd consecutive year. Indian Oil posted a record profit of Rs 21,346 crore in 2017-18, followed by ONGC, whose profit stood at Rs19,945 crore. Mukesh Ambani-led
Reliance Industries is the most profitable company for the 3rd straight year, posting highest ever profit of Rs36,075 crore.
