Vishwanathan Anand (b. 1969) is the first Indian and Asian to become the World Champion in Chess. He started his training of chess at the age of six from his Mother.Destiny crowned him with success at the tender age of fourteen years. He got numerous titles in national and International championships in chess. he could achieve all this because of his mental toughness and great concentration. he is known by several names like ‘One Man Chess Revolution’, ‘Boy Wonder’ and ‘The Tiger Of Madras’. He also won several awards for his achievements like Arjuna Award, Padma Shree, Padma Bhushan and plenty of others. He was added a glories chapter to the history of Indian sports.

Vishwanathan Anand was born on 11th December, 1969 in Chennai. He began his coaching of chess at the age of six from his mother Susheela. She gave him the first lessons in chess. His father Vishwanathan is a railway executive. Destiny topped him successfully at the tender age of fourteen years when he won the National sub-Junior Championship. Since then a string of victories ensured his winning several titles. Anand holds a degree in Commerce. His other hobbies are reading, swimming and being attentive to music. He will speak several languages like Spanish, French and German. he presently lives at ‘Callodo Mediano’ in spain with his wife Aruna. But he frequently visits India and loves his country. Anand is called by several names like ‘One Man Indian Chess Revolution’, ‘Boy Wonder’, ‘The Tiger of Madras’ etc.

Anand’s rise in the Indian chess world as meteoric. National level success came early for him when he won the National sub-Junior Chess Championship in 1983 at the age of fourteen. He became the youngest Indian and Asian to win the International Master title at the age of fifteen. in 1984. At the age of sixteen he became the youngest National Champion, in 1986. In 1987, he became 1st|the primary} Indian to win the world Junior Chess Championship and became India’s first grandmaster.

‘Vishy’, as Anand is usually known as by his friends, burst upon the upper echelons of the chess scene in the 1990s. he played chess at high speed. In 1991, he made the quarter finals of the FIDE Candidates Tournaments. Anand qualified for the professional chess Association World Chess Championships final by winning the candidates matches against some of the great champions of chess in 1995. He won 3 consecutive advanced chess tournaments. In 1998 he became the first Indian and Asian to win chess oscar. In 2000 he won the FIDE World Championship. In 2003 he won FIDE World rapid Chess Championship. In 2006 he became the first Indian and Asian to cross 2800 ELO rating. In September, 2007 Anand became the world Champion by winning this year’s FIDE World Championship Tournament held in mexico city.

Over the years, awards, accolades and landmarks have heaped on Vishwanathan Anand’s career. He could achieve all this because of his mental toughness and great concentration. He could get all this mental and physical strength thought a very well disciplined life that he leads. he is very soft spoken. He practices yoga regularly. He goes jogging and regularly spends time at the gymnasium wherever he is. He also desires to share his experiences with people who play chess and have interest during this game. Anand has received several awards for his extra ordinary achievements in chess. In 1985 Anand got arjuna Award for being outstanding Indian sportsman in chess. In 1987 he got 3 awards-Padma Shri, National citizens Award and Soviet Land nehru Award. he received Rajiv Gandhi Kehl ratan Award in 1991-92 for India’s highest porting honor. Forhis book, ‘My Best Games of Chess,’ he got British Chess Federation’s ‘Books of the Year’ award in 1998. In 2000 be hot Padma Bhushan. He got Jamio de Oro, the best honor given the the government of lanzarote in spain in 2001. The award is given to illustrious personalities with extraordinary achievements. In 1998 he got Sports star Millennium Award from India’s premier sports magazine for being the sports person of the millennium.

Anand has been giving extraordinary performances repeatedly in all the national and international championships. he is the inspiration for all the chess lovers. Following his steps, several Indians got encouraged to come forward in this field. He wants to form chess available in every nook and corner of the country.
