Banking & Economy

1.     The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released a report stating that India’s forex (foreign exchange) reserves have touched record high of $424.864 billion in Apr 2018.

2.     State-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) on Apr 13 has launched new products such as pre-approved credit card and UPI solution to mark its 124th foundation day.

3.     According to data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had grown 7.1% in Feb 2017.

4.     The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) tightened reporting norms for the Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) under which individual can transfer up to US $2,50,000 abroad in a year.

LRS is facility provided by RBI for all resident individuals including minors to freely remit upto certain amount in terms of US Dollar for current and capital account purposes or combination of both.

5.     The Asian Development Outlook 2018 released by Asian Development Bank (ADB) projected India’s economic growth to 7.3% in 2018-19 fiscal and further to 7.6% in 2019-20 fiscal.

6.     The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) approved $140 million loan for project aimed at improving rural roads (connectivity) in Madhya Pradesh.

7.     India has been ranked at 130 out of 186 economies in recently released Index of Economic Freedom 2018 that measures the degree of economic freedom in the countries of the world in which Hong Kong topped.

8.     India's largest state-owned bank, the State Bank of India (SBI) has become the first foreign bank in the UK after launching its UK subsidiary, SBI (UK) Limited, with an initial capital commitment of 225 million pounds from its parent entity.

9.     The State Bank of India (SBI) will be investing a total of Rs 80 billion in the Arun III hydropower project of Nepal, which has 900 megawatts (MW) electricity production capacities.

10.  The govt has amended Income Tax rules that will allow transgenders to be recognised as an independent category of applicants for obtaining a Permanent Account Number (PAN) for their tax-related transactions.

11.  Jammu and Kashmir Bank has launched a special financing scheme, 'Add on Working Capital GST' scheme to help the state industry cope with the delay in reimbursement of GST under special tax relief.

12.  The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has placed 11 public sector banks (PSBs) out of 21 State-owned banks under its Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework because of deteriorating performance.

11 Banks are:- IDBI Bank, UCO Bank, Bank of India (BoI), Central Bank of India, Indian Overseas Bank, Dena Bank, Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), Bank of Maharashtra (BoM), United Bank of India, Corporation Bank and Allahabad Bank.

13.  The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in consultation with the Govt hiked the foreign portfolio investors (FPI) investment limit in Central govt securities (G-Sec) from 5 per cent of outstanding stock now to 5.5 per cent in FY 2019 and 6 per cent in FY 2020.

1.     The second edition of India Mobile Congress (IMC-2018), organised by Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), will be held in New Delhi on Oct 25-27, 2018 with the theme "NEW DIGITAL HORIZONS Connect, Create, innovate."

2.     The 7th edition of Home Expo India 2018 has been inaugurated by Smriti Zubin Irani, the Union Minister of Textiles and Information and Broadcasting, at India Expo Centre and Mart in Greater Noida.

3.     The Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises extended Phase-1 of FAME India Scheme to provide financial support to electric and hybrid vehicles by another six months till Sept 30, 2018 or till launch of phase-II.

6.     The National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) under Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued Expression of Interest (EoI) for first offshore wind energy project of India.

7.     The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) launched a unique initiative ‘Project Dhoop’ to encourage schools to shift their morning assembly to around noon-time, mainly between 11 am to 1 pm, to ensure maximum absorption of Vitamin D in students through natural sunlight. .

8.     The conference of Lieutenant Governors and Administrators of Union Territories held at Megapode Resort, Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

9.     India’s first high-speed electric locomotive has been flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Madhepura Electric Locomotive Factory in Bihar.

10.  India donated US $1 million to support Swaziland’s National Disaster Management Agency as well as food grains.

11.  The Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment launched new website and mobile application of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK).

12.  The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) brought in secured digitally-signed QR Code on e-Aadhaar.

13.  Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has launched Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) scheme in Delhi and distributed new LPG connections and cylinders to beneficiaries.

14.  The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry banned over-the-counter sale of 14 steroid creams to prevent indiscriminate sale of ointments containing steroids and antibiotics without prescription.

1.     India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) bagged Rs 550-crore contract for developing a Mega Tourism Destination project at Bhairav Lanka in East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.

2.     Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has climbed six positions to enter the club of the top 20 busiest airports across the world.

3.     The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) has signed a MoU with the Nuclear Power

Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to provide skill training to 500 youth and women at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu.

4.     The 10th edition of a biennial exhibition of weapons and military hardware "DefExpo India- 2018" has started at Tiruvidanthal, Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu with the theme "India: The Emerging Defence

International news

1.     United Nations launched UN Road Safety Trust Fund to improve road safety worldwide to save lives and prevent the loss of opportunity associated with road accidents.

2.     Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced the scrapping of reservation in govt jobs.

3.     Saudi Aramco, the state-owned oil company of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, has signed a pact with a consortium of Indian oil companies to jointly develop and build a mega integrated refinery and petrochemicals complex Ratnagiri Refinery & Petrochemicals Ltd (RRPCL), in Maharashtra.

4.     The eleventh edition of World Hindi Conference will be hosted by Mauritius in its capital city Port Lois in Aug 18-20, 2018 with the theme "Vaishvik Hindi Aur Bharatiy Sanskriti".

5.     The 3-day International Conference on Human Rights in South Asia, organized by the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal, started in Kathmandu, Nepal with the theme "Identifying Challenges, Assessing Progress, Moving Forward: Addressing Impunity and Realizing Human Rights in South Asia".

6.      The first international conference on ‘Water, Environment and Climate Change: Knowledge Sharing and Partnership’ held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

1.     Veena Sahajwalla, an Indian-origin scientist in Australia, launched the world’s first microfactory that can transform the components from electronic waste items such as smartphones and laptops into valuable materials for re-use.

2.     The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi installed Massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) lab on campus for standardisation, R&D and manufacturing of 5G equipment.

3.     The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched IRNSS-1I navigation satellite from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

4.     The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will launch humanity’s first mission Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to the Sun in Jul 31, 2018.

2.     The Union Govt constituted 13-member task force, headed by Minister of State (MoS) for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha, to prepare road map and fast-track implementation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology or drones in the country.

3.     India and Morocco signed MoU in the field of Mining and Geology for a period of 5 years to promote mineral exploration.

4.     The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) delegated powers to Finance and Petroleum Ministers to award oil and gas exploration blocks to successful bidders under Hydrocarbon

Exploration Licensing Policy (HELP).

5.     The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) relaxed rules for state-owned Coal India Ltd (CIL) for extraction of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) lying below coal seams in its blocks in bid to quickly boost production.

6.     The Union Cabinet approved signing of Host country (Headquarters) Agreement between India and

International Solar Alliance (ISA).

7.     The Union Cabinet approved MoU between India and United Kingdom and Northern Ireland on the return of Illegal Migrants.

8.     The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has constituted a 12-member committee, headed by Regional Director (Western Region) Manmohan Juneja to review enforcement of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) provisions under Companies Act, 2013.

9.     The Maharashtra govt tied up with Tata Trusts to finance the state’s first poultry company to be run and owned by tribal women.

10.  India and World Expo 2020 Dubai have signed participants’ contract for India’s pavilion in prestigious
World Expo 2020 held once in 5 years.

11.  Singapore and China have inked an MOU to promote greater collaboration between companies from both countries in third-party markets along China’s ambitious Belt and Road routes.

12.  India agreed to build strategic railway link between Raxaul in Bihar and Kathmandu in Nepal to facilitate people-to-people (P2P) contact and bulk movement of goods.

13.  India and South Korea signed mutual recognition of certificate of competency of seafarers to provide Indian seafarers employment on over 500 Korean ships.

14.  India and Nepal agreed to develop inland waterways for cargo movement within Protocol to Treaty of Transit between both the countries to boost cooperation in connectivity sector.

Commonwealth games 2018

The Indian contingent won 66 medals in total at the 2018 Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in Gold Coast, Australia. Australia with 198 medals, which includes 80 Gold, 59 Silver and 59 Bronze, topped the ranking followed by England with 136 medals, which include 45 Gold, 45 Silver and 46 Bronze medals.

India ranked third with overall 66 medals having 26 Gold medals.
