WB cabinet passes bill to make Mamata Chancellor of state-run universities

The West Bengal cabinet on Monday approved a proposal to make Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Chancellor of all state-run universities under different departments like Health, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Minority Affairs. According to officials, the CM is going to replace Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, who currently holds the post. The decision will be taken up for approval in the state Assembly.

Nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-4 successfully tested from Odisha

India successfully carried out a training launch of nuclear-capable intermediate-range ballistic missile Agni-4 from Odisha's APJ Abdul Kalam Island on Monday, the Defence Ministry said. "The successful test reaffirms India's policy of having a credible minimum deterrence capability," it added. The test is part of routine user training launches carried out under Strategic Forces Command's aegis.

 


NABARD Chairman launches My Pad My Right programme in Leh 


National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Chairman Dr GR Chintala has launched "My Pad My Right programme", in Leh.  The programme launched by Nabard’s NabFoundation with machinery and materials of a cost of Seven and half Lakh rupees.  This will help women to participate in country’s economic development. Under this unique project, award winning sanitary pad making machines will be installed through the network of self help groups.


National Food laboratory of FSSAI Inaugurated in Raxaul, Bihar 


At Raxaul in Bihar, the union minister for health and family welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers Mr. Mansukh Mandaviya, inaugurated the National Food Laboratory of FSSAI.  Under the bilateral agreement between Indo-Nepal, this laboratory was established to reduce the time of testing of food samples imported from Nepal to Raxaul.

Tamil Nadu CM flags off luxury cruise liner “Empress” 


Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin flagged off the luxury cruise liner “Empress” from Chennai port. The eleven-storey tourist vessel can accommodate up to two thousand passengers and about 800 crew members.  This is considered the first luxury cruise liner to be operated from the state, while the state officials say a few other prominent operators have also shown interest in offering sea-based tourism services.

Swarup Kumar Saha appointed as head of Punjab & Sind Bank 


The government has appointed Swarup Kumar Saha as head of Punjab & Sind Bank. Saha, who is the executive director of Punjab National Bank (PNB), replaced S Krishnan, who also superannuated on May 31.  Saha, a graduate of Science from the University of Calcutta, Kolkata, started his career in banking in the erstwhile Oriental Bank of Commerce in the year 1990 as Probationary Officer.


A Manimekhalai appointed as MD of Union Bank 


The government has appointed A Manimekhalai as managing director of Union Bank of India.  Canara Bank executive director Manimekhalai replaced Rajkiran Rai G, who retired on May 31 after a five-year stint. With her assuming the charge, Manimekhalai becomes the first woman managing director of Union Bank of India.

World's biggest 4-day work week trial with no loss of salary begins in UK

The world's biggest trial of four-day work week is set to begin in the UK on Monday, with more than 70 companies and 3,300 employees. The trial will not result in any loss of pay for employees. It is based on the 100:80:100 model, implying that employees will get 100% of pay for 80% of time and maintain 100% productivity.

 


NATO kicks off drills with Finland, Sweden amid tensions with Russia

NATO on Sunday kicked off a two-week military exercise with Finland and Sweden in the Baltic Sea amid tensions with Russia over the war in Ukraine. Notably, Finland and Sweden had applied to join NATO in May. Russia had warned the two countries against joining the Western military alliance and warned them of retaliatory measures against the move.


UK PM Boris Johnson wins no-confidence vote

UK PM Boris Johnson has won the no-confidence motion brought in the country's Parliament over the 'partygate' scandal. Johnson got 211 lawmakers' support while 148 MPs of his Conservative Party voted against him. The vote was triggered after at least 54 MPs from Conservative Party submitted letters of no confidence to the Chair of the 1922 Committee of backbench lawmakers.

PM launches new series of coins, says 'it will remind people of goal of amrit kal'

PM Narendra Modi has released a special series of ₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10 and ₹20 coins, featuring the 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' design. The "visually impaired friendly" coins will be a part of the circulation, the government said. PM Modi said the coins will "remind people of the goal of amrit kal" and motivate them to work towards India's development.

PhonePe Founder and CEO Sameer Nigam told CNN News-18 that it is moving its holding company from Singapore to India and plans to launch an IPO in India. "We are a made in India company. Every office, data centre, and employee of ours is here. There's no reason why we shouldn't contribute to wealth creation in this market," Nigam said.

 

 

Digital Payments in India expected to increase triple by 2026


The digital payment markets in India are expected to increase triple from the current three trillion dollars to ten trillion dollars in the coming four years, which is by 2026.  This was confirmed by the report issued by PhonePe after the collaboration with Boston Consulting Group (BCG), the report was titled 'Digital Payments in India: A $10 trillion opportunity.  The report highlights the growth of India's digital payments in the last five years. The growth in five years has resulted in aiming those digital payments will aim to constituting two out of three payment transactions by 2026.




RBI announces results of 1st Global Hackathon "HARBINGER 2021"


The Reserve Bank of India had launched its first global hackathon - “HARBINGER 2021 – Innovation for Transformation” with the theme ‘Smarter Digital Payments’ which was communicated.  The hackathon received encouraging response with 363 proposals submitted by teams from within India and from 22 other countries including the USA, UK, Sweden, Singapore, Philippines, and Israel.  The Hackathon ran in three phases with shortlisting of proposals in the first phase, solution development in the second phase followed by the final evaluation in the third phase.




MS Dhoni invests for Chennai drone company Garuda Aerospace 


Former Indian cricket team captain, MS Dhoni has invested an undisclosed sum in Chennai-based Garuda Aerospace, India's leading drone-as-a-service (DaaS) provider. He will also be the face and brand ambassador of the company.  The investment is part of a bridge round, ahead of a $30-million Series A round, which the company is currently in the process of closing by end-July at a valuation of $250 million, confirmed founder Agnishwar Jayaprakash.

India-Bangladesh joint military Sampriti-X exercise begins 


India-Bangladesh bilateral defence cooperation, a joint military training exercise Ex SAMPRITI-X is being conducted at Jashore Military Station in Bangladesh from 05 June to 16 June 2022.  The aim of the exercise is to strengthen interoperability between the two armies and to understand each other’s tactical drills and operational techniques.  The Indian contingent of company strength is being represented by a Battalion of the DOGRA Regiment and the contingent departed by road for the exercise location on 4 Jun 2022.

The Dutch documentary film “Turn Your Body to the Sun”, which tells the incredible story of a Soviet Prisoner of War, has won the prestigious Golden Conch award for the Best Documentary Film at MIFF 2022.  The top award of the Mumbai International Film Festival for Documentary, Short Fiction and Animation Films was presented by the Governor of Maharashtra Shri Bhagat Singh Koshiyari.

French Open Tennis Grand Slam 2022


The 2022 French Open was a Grand Slam tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. World Environment Day is observed globally on 5th June every year. This day is observed to raise awareness about protecting the environment and to remind people not to take nature granted.  The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the nodal agency that organises and supports events across the world.  The year 2022 marks the 50th WED. Sweden is the host this year and the theme is ‘Only One Earth,’ focusing on the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature.


International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing 2022 


International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing is organized every year on 5th June.  The day is the opportunity to draw attention to the threats posed by IUU fishing activities to the sustainable use of fisheries resources as well as to ongoing efforts to fight these activities.  In 2015, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO proposed that an initiative be launched to declare an International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.


Russian Language Day 2022 Observed on 6th June


The UN Russian Language Day is observed annually on 06 June. It is one of the six official languages used by the United Nations throughout the Organization.  The day was established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2010.  June 6, the birthday of the great Russian poet A.S. Pushkin, as part of the program to support and develop multilingualism and cultural diversity, the UN celebrates the Day of the Russian Language.
