VP Naidu launches India-Qatar Start-Up bridge in Doha

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday launched the "India-Qatar Start-Up bridge" at the India-Qatar Business Forum in Doha to link the startup ecosystems of the two countries. "We have now a very robust India-Qatar economic partnership and it's getting enriched with each passing day," Naidu said. Number of Indian businesses in Qatar has also increased, he added.

          
WHO lists 5 key actions to prevent monkeypox

Amid rising monkeypox cases, WHO listed five key actions to prevent the disease. It suggested raising awareness about monkeypox and equipping countries to be able to recognise it. The second step is stopping human-to-human transmission using public health tools. Third step is protecting frontline workers. The next actions are utilising countermeasures like antivirals and accelerating research.

RBI may use pics of Rabindranath Tagore, APJ Abdul Kalam on banknotes: Report

In a first, the Finance Ministry and the RBI are considering using watermark figures of Rabindranath Tagore and APJ Abdul Kalam on a new series of banknotes, as per a report. It added that two separate sets of Gandhi, Tagore and Kalam watermarks have been sent to IIT-Delhi Emeritus Professor Dilip T Shahani before a final presentation to the Centre.

Actor Kamal Haasan's 'Vikram' has crossed the ₹100-crore mark globally within two days of its release. It has become the third film to cross the ₹100-crore mark globally in Haasan's career after 'Dasavatharam' and 'Vishwaroopam'. The film, which also stars Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil and Suriya, has been directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.


CEC Rajiv Kumar treks 18 km to remote polling booths in U'khand

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar trekked for 18 kilometres on Friday to the remote polling booths of Uttarakhand to assess the challenges faced by polling parties in hilly areas. Kumar visited Dhumak and Kalgoth, the most remote polling booths of Uttarakhand located in Chamoli. "Polling parties have to walk three days to reach here," Kumar said.

Tunisian judges to strike for a week after Prez sacks 57 judges

Tunisian judges will hold a week-long strike from Monday and a sit-in protest after the country's President Kais Saied dismissed 57 judges over charges of corruption and protecting terrorists last week. Earlier in February, Saied had also dissolved the Supreme Judicial Council. "The attack was not only against judges, but on the law and freedoms," a judges' association head said.


After Qatar & Kuwait, Iran summons Indian envoy over BJP leader's remark against Prophet

After Qatar and Kuwait, Iran has also summoned the Indian ambassador to condemn and reject a BJP leader's remarks against Prophet Mohammed. The state media called it an "insult against Prophet of Islam in an Indian TV show". This comes ahead of Iranian Foreign Minister's first-ever trip to India next week.


Fringe elements' view, not our govt's: India to Kuwait over BJP leader's remark on Prophet

After Kuwait condemned BJP leader's remarks on Prophet Mohammed and sought India's apology, Indian embassy in Kuwait released a statement, saying that the offensive tweets were fringe elements' view. "The tweets do not, in any manner, reflect the views of the Government of India...Strong action has been taken," India stated. BJP suspended Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal over remarks.


Spain to deliver anti-aircraft missiles & tanks to Ukraine: Report

Spain will supply anti-aircraft missiles and tanks to Ukraine as it seeks to boost its military support to the country, according to government sources cited by a local newspaper. Spain will also provide essential training to Ukraine's military in how to use the tanks, it claimed. Spain has supplied ammunition, individual protection equipment and light weapons to Ukraine so far.

4 of top 10 valued firms add ₹2.31 lakh cr in m-cap in past week; RIL lead gainer

Four of the top 10 most valued domestic firms together added ₹2,31,320.37 crore in market valuation in the past week. While Reliance Industries contributed the most with a valuation jump of ₹1,38,222.46 crore to ₹18,80,350.47 crore, it was followed by TCS whose valuation zoomed by ₹64,618.85 crore to ₹12,58,274.59 crore. Infosys and ICICI Bank were the other gainers.

 


India's trade deficit widens to $23.33 bn in May, exports rise 15%

India's trade deficit widened to $23.33 billion in May 2022, compared with $6.53 billion recorded in May 2021, as imports grew faster than exports. Merchandise exports rose 15.46% to $37.29 billion while imports grew 56.14% to $60.62 billion. While petroleum and crude oil imports rose 91.6% to $18.14 billion, coal imports rose to $5.33 billion in May 2022.


IL&FS creditors to get ₹16,000 crore on pro-rata basis

National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has approved the interim distribution of ₹16,361 crore to IL&FS creditors at the holding company level. The amount includes ₹11,296 crore in cash and ₹5,065 crore in Infrastructure Investment Trusts. The interim distribution "shall be implemented only after approval by the new board" and "shall take place [on] pro rata basis", NCLAT said.

Joe Root becomes joint-youngest batter to reach 10,000 Test runs, breaks Sachin's record

Former England captain Joe Root has become the joint-youngest batter to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Root completed 10,000 runs in Test cricket at the age of 31 years and 157 days, equalling Alastair Cook's record. He overtook Sachin Tendulkar, who had reached the 10,000-run mark at the age of 31 years and 326 days.


Unseeded Garcia-Mladenovic win their 2nd French Open title as a team

Unseeded French pair of Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic have clinched their second French Open women's doubles title together. The 2016 champions defeated eighth seeds Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of America 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in final on Sunday. Overall, this is Mladenovic's fourth French Open women's doubles title, having won it in 2019 and 2020 alongside Hungary's Timea Babos.
