Eknath Shinde sworn-in as Maharashtra Chief Minister; Fadnavis becomes Deputy CM

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde has been sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a day after Uddhav Thackeray resigned from the post. BJP leader and former CM Devendra Fadnavis has become the Deputy Chief Minister of the state. This comes after Shinde and Fadnavis met Governor BS Koshyari and staked claim to form the government in the state.


Who is Eknath Shinde, the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra?

Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde has been sworn-in as the new Maharashtra CM. Shinde, once an auto-rickshaw driver, was a Shakha Pramukh in Thane in 1980s, before becoming a corporator in Thane Municipal Corporation. The four-time MLA has served as Maharashtra minister twice. He served as Urban Development Minister in Uddhav Thackeray-led government, before staking claim to form government.

 


Hegemony of 1 religion will never be part of our culture: NHRC Chief

NHRC Chairperson Arun Kumar Mishra on Thursday said that the hegemony of one religion has never been a part of our culture and it'll never be. "Peaceful co-existence is our culture, our dharma. If our blood is not different, how can there be any difference between religions, gods?" he asked, while addressing a gathering in New Delhi.

 


PM Modi to unveil Alluri Seetarama Raju's statue in Andhra on July 4

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Andhra Pradesh's Bhimavaram town on July 4 to unveil the statue of freedom fighter Alluri Seetarama Raju as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations. Special Chief Secretary Rajat Bhargava on Thursday inspected the arrangements ahead of the event. PM Modi will unveil a 30-foot bronze statue in Bhimavaram Park and address the gathering.


Special Maha Assembly sessions on July 2, 3; Speaker election to be held

The Maharashtra Cabinet has decided to call special sessions of the Assembly on July 2 and 3. On the first day of the session, the election for Speaker will be completed as the post is vacant since Nana Patole's resignation. The decision comes after Eknath Shinde took oath as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra.


Dak Karmayogi E-learning Platform launched by the Government 


The Dak Karmayogi, which is an e-Learning portal of the department of posts was launched by Shri Ashwini Vaishnav minister of communication, railways, electronics, and IT, and Shri Devusinh Chauhan minister of state for communications.  The function was held at Stein auditorium Indian habitat Centre on 28 June 2022.  This portal has been developed under the vision of mission Karmayogi which was initiated by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi with a view of bringing efficiency in the actions of all the employees of the Government of India and transforming the efficiency of bureaucracy with minimum Government and maximum governance.

Russian lawmakers approve bill on banning foreign media outlets

Russian State Duma on Thursday approved bill seeking ban on foreign media outlets in response to other countries’ actions against Russian news organisations amid Ukraine war. It allows Russia to cancel foreign outlets' registration for disseminating illegal news or discrediting its armed forces. Bill will be sent to parliament's upper house for approval before being signed into law by president.

 


UK announces 75 scholarships for Indian students on 75th year of Independence 


The United Kingdom government has announced a partnership with leading businesses in India to offer 75 fully funded scholarships for Indian students to study in the UK from September, in celebration of the 75th anniversary of India's independence.  Additionally, the British Council in India is offering around 18 scholarships for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) covering over 12,000 courses across more than 150 UK universities.  The programmes on offer include Chevening scholarships for a one-year Master's programme, with the opportunity to study any subject at a UK university.


'Partners in the Blue Pacific': New programme started by US and Allies 


The US and its allies, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the United Kingdom, have launched a new initiative called Partners in the Blue Pacific for effective and efficient cooperation with the region's small island nations in response to China's aggressive push to expand its sphere of influence in the Pacific.  After China pushed for a broad, common cooperation pact with 10 Pacific states, it became obvious the planned extent of its expanding influence and the geostrategic competition in the region increased.

Indian Coast Guard launched "PADMA" centralised payment system 


Pay Roll Automation for Disbursement of Monthly Allowances (PADMA), an automated Pay & Allowances module for the Indian Coast Guard was inaugurated by Shri Rajnish Kumar, Controller General of Defence Accounts (CGDA), Ministry of Defence.  The CGDA emphasized that the Government has campaigned for Digital India to ensure dedicated services and reduce manual intervention at every level & to promote E-Governance in a big way.

New labour laws allow for 4-day work week, increased PF contribution

Centre seeks to implement new labour laws from July 1, but several states are yet to ratify regulations, which is a must before implementation. Under the new laws, companies can increase timings to 12 hours with three weekly offs. The basic salary will be at least 50% of gross month

 

 


For public issues of REIT and InvIT , SEBI now offers UPI payment option 


Retail investors may use UPI, or the unified payments interface mechanism, to apply in the public offering of REITs and InvITs for application values up to Rs 5 lakh, according to capital markets regulator Sebi.  The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) stated in two separate circulars that the new framework, which aims to further streamline the procedure, will be applicable to public issue of units of Infrastructure Investment Trust (InvIT) and real estate investment trust (REIT).



To provide e-PAN Services, Protean and PayNearby collaborate 


In order to provide PAN-related services for PayNearby's retail partners through Aadhaar and biometric or SMS-based OTP authentication for their clients, Protean eGov Technologies Ltd (previously NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Ltd) and PayNearby have formed a cooperation. For millions of citizens, the cooperation seeks to improve service delivery.  A digital copy of the ePAN will be generated shortly after the online application form is submitted, and a physical copy will be given to the clients at their preferred address in 4-5 working days.  For the Government of India's Income Tax Department, Protean accepts and handles PAN applications. PayNearby will serve as Protean's PAN Service Agency (PSA) as part of the agreement.

Novak Djokovic becomes 1st player to win 80 matches in all four Grand Slams 


Novak Djokovic became the first player in history to win 80 matches in all four Grand Slams when he defeated Kwon Soon-woo 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court his 80th win in Wimbledon.  By virtue of his victory, the former world no.1 tennis players has created history winning his 80th match at the Wimbledon. The six-time champion has became the first male player in the Open Era to win 80 or more match at all four grand slams.

U23 Asian Wrestling Championships 2022: Deepak Punia won bronze 


Tokyo Olympian Deepak Punia won a bronze medal after defeating Maksat Satybaldy (Kyrgyzstan) in the 86kg freestyle weight category at the U23 Asian wrestling championships 2022 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.  Despite a win, it was an unimpressive result from him as the Indian contingent was expecting a better outing from the world championships silver medalist in the tournament.

International Day of Parliamentarism 2022: 30 June


June 30 is observed as the International Day of Parliamentarism every year to commemorate the date on which the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) was founded.  The IPU, founded in Paris in 1889, is an international organisation of national parliaments to promote democratic governance, accountability, and cooperation among its members.  In 2022, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and its Member Parliaments will mark the International Day of Parliamentarism under the theme of public engagement.  The International Day of Parliamentarism is celebrated every year on 30 June, the date in 1889 on which the IPU was founded. The Day was established in 2018 through a United Nations General Assembly Resolution.


International Asteroid Day 2022: 30 June 


World Asteroid Day (also known as International Asteroid Day) is an annual UN-sanctioned global awareness campaign event observed on June 30, which is the anniversary of the Siberian Tunguska event of 1908.  To provide knowledge to the general public about the importance of asteroids in history, and the role they play in our solar system today. The theme of Asteroid Day 2022 is “small is beautiful.”


National Statistics Day 2022: 29 June


National Statistics Day is observed in India on June 29 each year. The day aims to raise public awareness of the value of statistics in everyday life as well as in the planning and development process.  The celebrated statistician, Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, is recognised on National Statistics Day for his contributions to economic planning and statistics.  Additionally, the Indian Statistical Institute's founder, Professor PC Mahalanobis, celebrates his birthday on 29 June. The theme of National Statistics Day 2022 is 'Data for Sustainable Development'.

Olympic Medallist and Hockey World Cup winner Varinder Singh passes away


Indian hockey stalwart and member of the gold medal winning 1975 World Cup team, Varinder Singh passed away. He was 75. Singh was part of the gold medal-winning Indian team at the 1975 men’s Hockey World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.  Singh was also part of the bronze medal-winning team at the 1972 Munich Olympics and silver medal at 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam. In 2007, Varinder was conferred with the prestigious Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award.


John Visentin, CEO of printer maker Xerox, passes away aged 59

Printer maker Xerox Holdings Corporation's CEO John Visentin passed away due to complications from a long illness, the company said. "The Xerox family is profoundly saddened by this untimely event and extends its heartfelt condolences to John's wife, his five daughters and his family," the company added. The company has named President and Chief Operating Officer Steve Bandrowczak Interim CEO.
