Pant honoured by Uttarakhand CM, months after being appointed state brand ambassador

Cricketer Rishabh Pant was on Thursday honoured by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami in a programme organised at Uttarakhand Sadan in New Delhi, months after being appointed as the brand ambassador of the state. "It's no doubt a great feeling and also a huge responsibility," Pant wrote while sharing a picture on Instagram. Pant was born in Uttarakhand's Haridwar.


Scriptures like Manusmriti give respectable position to women: HC Judge

Delhi High Court judge Justice Prathiba M Singh has said that the Indian women "are a blessed lot" since scriptures like Manusmriti give a very respectable position to them. She added that India is more progressive about women being in leadership roles. Women are respected in Asian countries because of the cultural and religious background of scriptures, she further said.


Married daughters also entitled to compensation by insurance companies: K’taka HC

Married daughters are entitled to compensation by insurance companies on the loss of their parents in accidents, Karnataka High Court has held. The Supreme Court has held that married sons are also entitled to compensation in such cases, the HC said. "The very contention that married daughters of deceased are not entitled for compensation cannot be accepted," the court stated.


Shashi Tharoor to be conferred France's highest civilian award

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is set to be conferred with France's highest civilian award Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur for his writings and speeches. French Ambassador to India Emmanuel Lenain wrote to Tharoor, informing him about the award. "I am honoured to be recognised in this way. My gratitude and appreciation," Tharoor said.

The Supreme Court on Thursday observed that the promise and distribution of freebies by political parties during the poll season is "a serious issue", as the economy is losing money because of this. Chief Justice of India NV Ramana said that there's poverty in India, adding that the welfare of the people has to be balanced.


Jagdeep Dhankhar takes oath as 14th Vice President of India

Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar took oath as the 14th Vice President on Thursday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the Oath of Office to Dhankhar at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Dhankhar clinched 528 votes and defeated Opposition nominee Margaret Alva, who bagged 182 votes in the Vice Presidential election.

Punjab CM accepts resignation of VC who was asked by minister to lie down on dirty bed

Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann on Thursday accepted the resignation of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Vice-Chancellor Dr Raj Bahadur. He resigned on July 30, a day after Punjab Health Minister Chetan Singh Jauramajra forced him to lie down on a dirty bed at the university during an inspection. Dr Bahadur earlier said he felt humiliated.

I would rather lose than win on a false promise: UK PM hopeful Sunak

UK's Prime Ministerial candidate Rishi Sunak said he'd rather lose the Tory leadership race to replace Boris Johnson than "win on a false promise". Sunak, in an interview with BBC, said he'd tell people what "they needed to hear" and stay "true" to his values. Sunak added that he's committed to helping the most vulnerable families with the cost-of-living crisis.


Latvian Parliament declares Russia a 'state sponsor of terrorism'

The Latvian Parliament has declared Russia a “state sponsor of terrorism” for allegedly attacking civilians in its invasion of Ukraine. A strongly worded statement adopted by lawmakers in Riga said Moscow was using “suffering and intimidation as tools in its attempts to demoralise the Ukrainian people". In the 100-seat assembly, 67 lawmakers voted in favour of adopting the statement.


UN releases list of countries with highest digital currency ownership in 2021, India 7th

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development has released a list of top 20 countries with highest digital currency ownership in 2021. Ukraine topped the list with 12.7%, followed by Russia (11.9%), Venezuela (10.3%), Singapore (9.4%), Kenya (8.5%) and the US (8.3%). India is seventh on the list, with 7.3% of the population owning digital currency in 2021.


Cisco hit by cyberattack, hacker tried to access corporate network

Cisco Systems said that a hacker tried to gain access to its corporate network and was preparing to encrypt files but couldn't manage to do so as it was detected and booted out. Cisco came to know of the potential compromise in May but revealed it on Wednesday after a list of stolen files was leaked on the dark web.

SAIL Q1 net profit falls 79% to ₹804 crore due to higher expenses

The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) on Wednesday reported a 79% fall in its consolidated net profit to ₹804.50 crore in the quarter ended June as against ₹3,897.36 crore in the corresponding period last fiscal. Higher expenses by the company led to the decline as it increased to ₹23,295.23 crore as against ₹15,604.07 crore a year ago.


Nykaa's CEO of private label division Reena Chhabra quits

In a regulatory filing, Nykaa said that the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of its private label division FSN Brands, Reena Chhabra, has resigned, with effect from August 16. Earlier, she worked with cosmetic brand Colorbar as their COO and joined Nykaa in 2016. According to the draft red herring prospectus, she was paid a total of ₹3.06 crore in FY21.
BankBazaar.com to raise $100 mn in 3 years: CEO Adhil Shetty

BankBazaar.com is looking to raise $100 million in the next three years to aid the company's accelerating business practices, Founder and CEO Adhil Shetty said. The company expects to grow 80-90% in FY23, he added. Shetty said that the fintech firm achieved breakeven on a month-on-month basis in March 2022, and that they are currently not looking for immediate capital.


Gujarat govt unveils drone policy, expects to create 25,000 jobs

The Gujarat government has unveiled a new Drone Promotion and Usage Policy for state departments and organisations, which is aimed at the promotion and use of drones for operations and delivery of services. The state government expects that this policy will create 25,000 jobs and attract investments. The policy allows different departments to use drones for various operational requirements.


ICICI Bank briefly hits ₹6 lakh cr m-cap for 1st time; 7th Indian firm to do so

ICICI Bank on Thursday briefly recorded market capitalisation (m-cap) of ₹6.01 lakh crore with its shares hitting a record high of ₹866.15 on BSE. The bank has now become the seventh Indian firm to cross the ₹6-trillion-mark in m-cap. So far, Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, HDFC Bank, Infosys, Hindustan Unilever and Life Insurance Corporation have hit this achievement.
