Bomb blast in Mangaluru in autorickshaw is suspected to be an act of terror: Karnataka CM

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has said that the bomb blast in Mangaluru on Saturday in an autorickshaw is suspected to be an act of terror. Talking to reporters in Bellary on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that an LED inside a pressure cooker exploded in Mangaluru, injuring the autorickshaw driver and a passenger. Both are undergoing treatment in a hospital and not in a position to speak. The cooker was found fitted with a detonator, wires and batteries. The Chief Minister further disclosed that the police have tracked the original address of the injured passenger and the locations he had stayed.

The passenger of the autorickshaw was found with a fake Aadhar card and is suspected to have visited several places in India including Coimbatore. He informed that the case has been referred to the National Investigation Agency. After a preliminary probe, the state police suspect that the injured passenger might have links with terror outfits. On whether the passenger has links with banned organisation PFI, the Chief Minister said that the investigating agencies are looking into the matter.

 

India to take over Chair of Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence

After assuming the G20 Presidency, India will take over the Chair of Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, GPAI. Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar will represent the country at the GPAI meeting to be held in Tokyo tomorrow for the symbolic takeover from France. GPAI is an international initiative to support responsible and human-centric development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). GPAI is a congregation of 25 member countries, including the US, UK, European Union, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Korea and Singapore.

India had joined the GPAI in 2020 as a founding member. The Artificial Intelligence is expected to add 967 billion US dollar to Indian economy by 2035 and 450-500 billion dollar to India’s GDP by 2025. It is expected to account for 10 per cent of the country’s 5 trillion dollar GDP target.


India's CEC Rajiv Kumar observes general elections in Nepal

India's Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar led a four-member delegation to observe Nepal's general elections. Nepal is voting to elect a new parliament and provincial assemblies. On Sunday, polls were held to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives and 550 seats of the seven Provincial Assemblies. To supervise the polls, 46 organisations were assigned.

The polling to elect 275 members of the house of representatives started in Nepal at 7 am local time at over 22,000 polling centres and closed at 5 pm. According to press statement issued by the Election Commission of Nepal the voting, remained peaceful barring some sporadic incidents.

Chief Election Commissioner of Nepal Shree Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya informed that counting of votes will begin from 9 pm on Sunday amid tight security.

The commission would announce all the first-past-the-post results in the next eight days while the results of proportional representation elections would be announced by 8th December.

COP27 ends in Egypt with decision to establish loss and damage fund

The UN Conference on Climate Change, COP27, concluded in Egypt on Sunday with a decision to establish a loss and damage fund to assist developing countries that are vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. "I welcome the decision to establish a loss and damage fund and to operationalise it in the coming period," UN Secretary-General António Guterres said.

Synchronised rate hikes can spark recession: RBI Governor

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said that synchronised tightening of monetary policy globally can increase the risk of recession to tame inflation. However, he added that India is placed differently. The RBI has increased the repo rate by 50 basis points (bps) in each of the previous three policy reviews by the central bank's Monetary Policy Committee.

 


Air India allows crew to extend tenure under voluntary retirement

Tata Group-owned Air India has given its employees, including the cabin crew who opted for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS), the option to extend their tenure until January 31, 2023 amid reports of shortage of staff. The release date for those who had opted for the VRS was November 30, 2022. Reportedly, 4,500 staff had applied for the scheme.


Centre appoints 10 new Executive Directors for public sector banks

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of ten Executive Directors (ED) in various Public Sector Banks. Lalit Tyagi, Chief General Manager of Bank of Baroda, has been appointed as ED of the same bank for three years. Punjab National Bank's Binod Kumar has been named the ED for the same bank for three years as well.

 


₹16,328-cr Phase 3 project of B'luru metro gets state govt's approval

Karnataka government on Friday approved the ₹16,328-crore Phase 3 project of Bengaluru's Namma Metro. "By 2041, Bengaluru will have 314 km of metro rail," Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation MD Anjum Parwez said. Phase 3 will have two corridors-one along Outer Ring Road, with 22 stations covering 32.15 km, and the other via Magadi Road, with nine stations covering 12.5 km.


EPFO adds 16.82 lakh members in Sept, posts 9% YoY rise

Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) added 16.82 lakh members in September 2022, marking an increase of 9.14% as compared to the year-ago period, Labour Ministry data showed. Of the total additions, around 9.34 lakh members have come under the coverage of EPFO for the first time. About 58.75% of the new members are from the age group of 18-25 years.


Foreign investors buy Indian equities worth ₹30,385 cr in Nov so far

Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPI) have invested a net sum of ₹30,385 crore in equities during November 1-18, according to data with the depositories. The total outflow by FPIs in equities in 2022 stands at ₹1.4 lakh crore. On the other hand, foreign investors have pulled out ₹422 crore from the debt market during the period under review.

FIFA World Cup kicks off to spectacular start in Doha

The opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2022 has kicked off at the Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor in Qatar with cultural show amid a loud cheer from the fans.  France legend Marcel Desailly presented the World Cup trophy in front of the fans. The event takes place ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 opener between Qatar and Ecuador in the Group A.

The opening ceremony is underway at Al Bayt Stadium as South Korea's famous band BTS' singer, Jungkook is performing in a new tournament song, alongside Qatari singer Fahad Al-Kubaisi. Actor Morgan Freeman is on the stage, talking about unity and a troupe is performing a sword dance.

Thirty-two top countries from five regions will be in action for the championship title. In all 64 matches will be held across eight stadiums in Qatar. The host nation will take on Ecuador in the opening match at 9.30 pm India time today.
