Unacademy lays off 350 employees, CEO says 'I take complete responsibility'

Edtech unicorn Unacademy is laying off 10% of its workforce, or about 350 employees, in its second round of layoffs this year. In an email to employees, Unacademy CEO Gaurav Munjal said, "This decision has not been easy and I take complete responsibility." Citing Unacademy's commitment to no layoffs, Munjal said, "Market challenges have forced us to reevaluate our decisions."


Disposed of 10,000 cases: Outgoing CJI Lalit in farewell speech

Outgoing Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit, speaking at the farewell function organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association on Monday, said, "My journey began from this court and today it ends in the same court." "Since I took over, we disposed of 10,000 cases," he added. Justice DY Chandrachud will take over as India's 50th CJI.


PM Modi will unveil logo, theme of India's G20 presidency on Nov 8

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil the theme, logo and website of India's G20 presidency via video conferencing on November 8, the Ministry of External Affairs said. "The logo, theme and website of our G20 presidency would reflect India's message and overarching priorities to the world," the ministry added. India will assume the G20 presidency from December 1, 2022.


Ticket prices slashed for Puneeth's last film 'Gandhada Gudi' in Karnataka

Late actor Puneeth Rajkumar's wife Ashwini on Sunday announced that the ticket prices for his last film 'Gandhada Gudi' will be slashed from Monday to Thursday across Karnataka. She added that the film will be shown on single screens for ₹56 while it will be shown in multiplexes for ₹112. The film is a documentary on the wildlife of Karnataka.


Ministry of Education to celebrates ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ 


The Ministry of Education announced that this year India will celebrate ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’ in a grand manner in schools, and higher education institutions on 15 November 2022.  The Janjatiya Gaurav Divas was a name given on 15 November 2021 by the Union Cabinet of the Government of India to remember the contribution of tribal freedom fighters, as part of the year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of Indian independence.  The Government declared 15 November as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ dedicated to the memory of brave tribal freedom fighters.  The initiative has been taken under the leadership of Union Education and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.  15th November is the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda who is revered as Bhagwan by tribal communities across the country.

Madhya Pradesh: Ujjain to Get World's First Vedic Clock


Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, the city of Mahakal will soon boast the world’s first Vedic clock which will be synced with the position of the Sun. After laying the foundation stone at the 300-year-old Jiwaji Observatory in Ujjain, the state higher education minister Mohan Yadav said through this project, people will become familiar with the Vedic time calculation.  The state government has allocated Rs 1.62 crore for this mega project as it is working to restore the ancient glory of Ujjain. The minister said the (Vikramaditya) Vedic clock will be divided into 24 muhurats (hours).

Haryana Forest Department and USAID Launched TOFI Program


The Haryana Forest Department and US Agency for International Development (USAID) launched the “Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI)” program in the state. The “Trees Outside Forests in India” program will enhance carbon sequestration, support local communities, and strengthen the climate resilience of agriculture.  This initiative will bring farmers, companies, and other private institutions together to rapidly expand tree coverage outside of traditional forests in the state.  The Trees Outside Forests in India (TOFI) program will take Haryana’s State Action Plan on Climate Change forward and will build on Haryana’s progress and harness agroforestry to bolster the resilience of farming systems.  The program will leverage India’s private sector to promote and scale tree-based enterprises and the sale of carbon credits, helping to create jobs and boost incomes.


Rising Sun Water Fest-2022 culminates in Meghalaya 


Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 culminated with a grand Closing Ceremony at Umiam Lake, Meghalaya. The Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 was a three-day watersport and it was held from 3th to 5th November 2022.  Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 was the first of its kind in the North East and aimed at encouraging the sports-loving youth of North East to take up water sports like Rowing and Sailing. It also aimed at promoting tourism in the North East.  Rising Sun Water Fest 2022 was an initiative by the Indian Army's Eastern Command with the governments of Assam and Meghalaya.  The three-day event was witnessed by a large number of viewers, locals as well visitors from other cities and states.

Musk-appointed engineer Sriram shares 4 reasons to defend Twitter's $8 fee

Sriram Krishnan, the Indian-origin engineer advising Elon Musk on Twitter, defended the $8 verification fee. He tweeted, "Everyone caught impersonating will lose their money," and added, "$8 gives a consistent path for anyone regardless of their level of notability". He also said blue tick will reduce spam issues and will validate "this person is who they say they are".

KV Kamath appointed as Independent Director of RIL 


Reliance Industries has appointed K V Kamath as the Independent Director of the company for a period of five years.  The Board of Directors has, at its meeting held, based on the recommendation of the human resources, nomination and remuneration committee considered and recommended to the shareholders for approval the appointment of Shri K. V. Kamath.  KV Kamath has also been appointed as an Independent Director and non-executive Chairman for Reliance Strategic Investment Limited (RSIL). RSIL will be renamed as Jio Financial Services Limited (“JFSL") and the scheme of demerger approved by the board of directors for demerger of the financial services business.

Asian Hockey Federation CEO Tayyab Ikram elected as new FIH president 


Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) CEO, Mohammad Tayyab Ikram of Macau was elected as the new president of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), succeeding India’s Narinder Batra as its full-time chief.  Ikram defeated Marc Coudron of Belgium 79-47 in the 48th FIH Congress held virtually. Out of 129 national associations, 126 casted valid votes. The duration of Ikram’s term will be for two years, in order to complete the mandate of the previous chief, Batra, who resigned on July 18.

Kishor K Basa named Chairman Of National Monuments Authority 


Professor Kishor Kumar Basa has been appointed as the chairman of the National Monument Authority (NMA). The Department of Culture of the Government of India issued an official notification in this regard. He will have a tenure of three years.  Basa is the vice chancellor of Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanj Deo University in Baripada and also the chairman of the Indian National Confederation and Academy of Anthropologists (INCAA), which is the largest anthropological association in India.  He had been teaching archaeological anthropology and museum studies since 1980 and was the former head of the department of Anthropology at Utkal University.

12 state-run banks post 50% jump in Q2 profit at ₹25,685 crore: FM

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that 12 public sector banks reported a 50% jump in combined net profit at ₹25,685 crore in the second quarter ended September. "The continuous efforts of...government for reducing the NPAs and...strengthening the health of PSBs are now showing tangible results," she tweeted. Notably, SBI posted the highest-ever profit of ₹13,265 crore in Q2.


RBI should let rupee depreciate, use forex reserves judiciously: CEA

Chief Economic Advisor V Anantha Nageswaran said that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) should allow the rupee to depreciate gradually and foreign exchange reserves should be used judiciously. "We should augment foreign exchange reserves and that will help with any contingencies," Nageswaran added. India's foreign reserves have fallen from $642 billion to $531 billion.

 


SBI Logs Highest-Ever Quarterly Profit in The 2nd Quarter 


State Bank of India reported 74 per cent year-on-year increase in net profit at ₹13,265 crore for quarter ended September, buoyed by robust loan sales, higher interest income and lower provisions.  This marks the highest ever quarterly net profit posted by the bank. The bank’s net interest income rose by 13 per cent to ₹35,183 crore, while its operating profit expanded to ₹21,120 crore, up 17 per cent year-on-year. Robust growth in advances at ₹30,35,071 crore, up 20 per cent year-on-year boosted the bank’s financials in the September quarter.

Giriraj Singh Unveiled Panchayati Raj’s Rural Development Agenda Booklet


Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Giriraj Singh unveiled the booklet ‘Agenda for Members of Panchayati Raj Institutions for Rural Development'.  The ‘Agenda for Members of Panchayati Raj Institutions for Rural Development" booklet will provide information about all the schemes such as MGNREGA, Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojna- National Rural Livelihood Mission, PM Awas Yojna- Grameen, PM Gram Sadak Yojna, etc. will be available to the representative and the general public.  The ‘Agenda for Members of Panchayati Raj Institutions for Rural Development' book will be brought in regional languages soon.  The book can form the basis for an informed discussion on the different schemes of the Ministry of Rural Development among members of the Gram Panchayats.  This book will help everyone including the elected members of Gram Panchayats in understanding the schemes and their eligibility, which will further strengthen transparency and public participation.

Uttarakhand Gaurav Samman: NSA Ajit Doval and late CDS Gen Rawat to receive award


Uttarakhand Gaurav Samman: The Uttarakhand government announced that this year's Uttarakhand Gaurav Samman would be given to National Securtiy Advisor (NSA), Ajit Doval, poet Prasoon Joshi, and three other individuals for their notable achievements.  Ajit Doval will get the prize posthumously, along with former Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Bipin Rawat, late poet and author Girish Chandra Tiwari, and late journalist Viren Dangwal.  Journalist and poet Viren Dangwal, who passed away, will receive the honour posthumously. Numerous Hindi poetry by the late Girish Chandra Tiwari have received praise from literary critics.  Every year, the government of Uttarakhand honours individuals with the Uttarakhand Gaurav Samman in recognition of their accomplishments in their various disciplines.

17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention: Guyana President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali to be chief guest


Guyana President, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali will be the chief guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention. It will be held from 8th to 10th January next year in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.  The theme of the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is Diaspora: Reliable Partners for India's Progress in Amrit Kaal. Member of Parliament of Australia, Zaneta Mascarenhas will be the guest of honour at the Youth Pravasi Bharatiya Divas which will be held on 8th January next year. Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention is the flagship event of the Ministry of External Affairs and provides an important platform to engage and connect with overseas Indians.  Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is celebrated once in every two years to strengthen the engagement of the overseas Indian community with the Government of India and reconnect them with their roots.

19-yr-old Rune defeats Novak Djokovic to win Paris Masters title

Danish teenager Holger Rune defeated Novak Djokovic 3-6 6-3 7-5 to win his first Masters title in Paris. "You're one of my favourite players, I've watched you since I was a kid," said the 19-year-old to Djokovic after the match. Rune, who beat four other top-10 players en route to the final, will now move into the Top 10 rankings.


Indian men’s squash team won gold medal in Asian Squash Team Championships


The Indian men’s team, led by the seasoned Saurav Ghosal, clinched its first-ever gold at the Asian Squash Team Championships with a 2-0 win over Kuwait in the final. Star player Ghosal sealed the victory after Ramit Tandon had given India the lead with a fluent straight games win over Ali Aramezi (11-5, 11-7, 11-4).  Ghosal then made short work of Ammar Altamimi 11-9, 11-2, 11-3 to give the team an unassailable lead. The third match between Abhay Singh and Falah Mohammad was not played as the tie had been decided following wins for Tandon and Ghosal.  It is the biggest win of Indian Men's Team since they won 2014 Asian Games Gold. The Indian men's team has won three silver medals in the Asian Team Squash Championships and seven bronze medals.  Hong Kong upset favourites Malaysia to win the women's Asian Team Championship title for the fourth time this millennium. Earlier, the Indian women's team settled for the Bronze medal after losing to Malaysia 1-2 in the semifinals.

International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict 2022


On November 6th, the UN observes the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict. The day seeks to make people aware of the consequences that war and conflict have on the environment.  This day was established to protect the environment as a source of security and peace and to prevent its use in military conflicts. We are all encouraged to speak up and reaffirm our commitment to protecting our threatened planet, even in the face of armed aggression.  On 5 November 2001, the UN General Assembly declared 6 November of each year as the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict (A/RES/56/4).  On 27 May 2016, the United Nations Environment Assembly adopted resolution UNEP/EA.2/Res.15, which recognized the role of healthy ecosystems and sustainably managed resources in reducing the risk of armed conflict, and reaffirmed its strong commitment to the full implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals listed in General Assembly resolution 70/1, entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.


National Cancer Awareness Day 2022: History & Significance


National Cancer Awareness Day 2022 is celebrated every year on 7th November in India. This day is important because it educates people about the serious risk of cancer. The condition of people dying of cancer is a serious threat to India. In the year 2020, 8.5 lakh people in India died of cancer. For this reason, National Cancer Awareness Day 2020 is celebrated every year on 7 November to raise awareness about this type of cancer.  Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan first announced National Cancer Awareness Day in September 2014. He started a state-level movement on cancer control and encouraged people to report to municipal clinics for a free screening. A booklet talking about the early signs of cancer and how to avoid it was also distributed.

Independent India's first voter Master Shyam Saran Negi passes away


Three days after casting his vote for the 34th time, India’s oldest voter Shyam Saran Negi died on November 5, 2022 at his home in Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh. He was 106.  Negi, who was the Election Commission’s brand ambassador, voted for the Himachal Pradesh Assembly election through postal ballot on November 2. It was the last vote for the man who was 31 when India gained Independence.   06 AND 07 2022
