Sarayu river floods several areas in UP's Gorakhpur

The Sarayu river has flooded several areas of Gola and Barhalganj tehsils in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district. As many as 296 boats are carrying out the relief work and Prayagraj district officials have been asked to send 12 motor boats to the region. Neighbouring Azamgarh and Deoria districts in UP have also been affected by the flooded river.




India Stands 3rd in the World in Terms of Fish Production 


Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying  Dr. L Murugan has recently said that India stands third in the world in terms of fish production. India is the 3rd largest fish producing and 2nd largest aquaculture nation in the world after China.  The vision is to bring about Blue Revolution through sustainable and responsible development of fisheries sector.  The main motto of PMMSY is ‘Reform, Perform and Transform’in the fisheries sector.  Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying is the implementing agency.  The PMMSY is an umbrella scheme with two separate components – Central Sector Scheme and Centrally Sponsored Scheme.  The Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) Component is further segregated into non-beneficiary oriented and beneficiary-orientated sub-components/activities.

 

GoI approved 1st suspension bridge across Krishna river 


The central government has approved the construction of an iconic cable stayed-cum-suspension bridge across the Krishna river connecting Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and passing through the Nallamala forest range.  The decision was announced by the union minister for road transport and national highways Nitin Gadkari. Gadkari said the iconic bridge will have several unique features like the longest glass pedestrian walkway across a river, gopuram-like pylons, signature lighting and a large navigational span.


Three-day Kuchipudi dance festival to begin in Vijayawada 


The third World Kuchipudi Natyotsavam was organized for three days in Vijayawada. The World Kuchipudi Natyotsavam starts on 14th October 2022.  The Kuchipudi dance festival is being organized in commemoration of the 93rd birth anniversary of world-renowned Kuchipudi dance artist Vempati China Satyam.  The World Kuchipudi Natyotsavam is being organized by the collaboration of the Department of Culture, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Kuchipudi Art Academy, and Jayaho Bharateeyam.  More than 3,000 Kuchipudi dancers from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana will take part in the Kuchipudi Dance Festival.  The Kuchipudi dance students will give ‘Maha Brinda Natyam’ which is a grand performance on each day.


Tamil Nadu is the only State to achieve Jal Jeevan Mission target for 2022 


Tamil Nadu has emerged as the only state in India which has achieved the target for 2022 Q1 and Q2 for Jal Jeevan Mission, with 69.57 lakh households provided with tap connections.  Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat visited Chennai and reviewed the progress of the work on the Jal Jeevan Mission for assured portable Tap water supply to every rural household by 2024.  Out of 1.25 crore households in Tamil Nadu, 69.57 lakh households have received tap water connections in Tamil Nadu.  The percentage of households with tap water connection is higher than the national average.  The target set by the Union government for Q1 and Q2 for 2022 was 12.1 lakh tap connections and registering 134% of that.

Nearly 9,000 Russian troops will be stationed in country: Belarus

Belarus's Defence Ministry has said just under 9,000 Russian troops would be stationed in the country as part of a "regional grouping" of forces to protect its borders. "The first convoys of Russian servicemen...have arrived," the ministry said on Saturday. Belarus declared the joint troop deployment last week, saying it was in response to "threats" from Ukraine and the West.


Biden will act 'methodically' in responding to Saudi Arabia: Sullivan

US President Joe Biden will act "methodically" in deciding the nature of the response to Saudi Arabia's decision of reducing oil production, the US National Security Adviser said on Sunday. The options do, however, include changes to US security assistance, Jake Sullivan added. OPEC+ countries led by Russia and Saudi Arabia declared oil output cuts despite US objections last week.


Started debt restructuring talks with the IMF, India and China: Sri Lankan President

Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said the nation has begun debt restructuring talks with the IMF, India and China for overcoming its economic crisis. Wickremesinghe said talks have also started with private creditors. He said the funds from World Bank, Asian Development Bank, the US and the EU were being used to pay for the medicine and fertiliser imports.



Japan to Scrap Remarriage Restrictions on Pregnant Women


Japanese cabinet ministers on Oct 14 approved the scrapping of a law that stipulates women pregnant at the time of a divorce must wait 100 days before marrying again.  The law, in place for more than a century, does not apply to men and was originally intended as a way to aid the identification of the father who is financially responsible for a newborn baby.  Critics have campaigned for a withdrawal of the 1896 law – which had banned remarriage for six months until being revised in 2016 – calling it outdated and discriminatory. The change will also remove a rule that grants parents the right to “discipline children to whatever necessary extent”.


US Congressmen Introduce Resolution to Recognise Pakistani Atrocities During 1971 as Genocide 


Two American congressmen have introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives urging the Biden administration to recognise the Pakistan Army’s atrocities against ethnic minorities during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh.  The legislation was brought by Congressmen Ro Khanna and Steve Chabot on October 14, calling on the Pakistan government, among other things, to apologise to the people of Bangladesh for its role in the genocide of ethnic Bengalis and Hindus during the war.  The Bangladeshi community welcomed the congressmen’s move, expressing satisfaction at the resolution getting bipartisan support from the Republicans and the Democrats.

Bandhan Bank has announced that it has roped in Sourav Ganguly as it’s Brand Ambassador. Sourav Ganguly will help amplify the brand message of the Bank and endorse the products and services of the Bank.  Ganguly led the transformation of the Indian cricket team in the early 2000s, just like Bandhan led the transformation of not-so-privileged households in rural and semi-urban India. 75 digital banking units set up in record 6 months: RBI Governor

As PM Narendra Modi on Sunday dedicated 75 Digital Banking Units (DBUs) to the nation, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said these DBUs were set up in a record six months in 75 districts spread across the country to commemorate 75 years of independence. "It is a special banking facility that'll provide maximum services through minimum digital infrastructure," he added.


IBM's Client Innovation Center inaugurated in Odisha by CM Patnaik

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated IBM's Client Innovation Center (CIC) in Bhubaneswar. Speaking at the inauguration, Patnaik called it a "watershed moment, signifying the fast changing IT ecosystem in the state". He added that Odisha is now fast emerging as a technology resource hub. "Over the years, the resurgent Odisha has scripted success stories in many spheres," Patnaik said.
2 Karnataka Bank DBUs commence operations

Two digital banking units (DBUs) of Karnataka Bank started operations on Sunday, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated 75 DBUs to the nation. The two DBUs started operations at Airport Road, Yeyyadi in Mangaluru and Vijayanagara 1st Stage in Mysuru, the bank said. CEO and Chairman MS Mahabaleshwara called the recognition special as the bank steps into its centenary year.


Piyush Goyal: India to achieve USD 2 trillion export target by 2030 


Piyush Goyal Predicts the Growth of Economy and Exports: Piyush Goyal, the minister of commerce and industry, expressed confidence that the nation will reach its goal of 2 trillion USD in products and services exported by 2030.  The Union Commerce and Industry minister was addressing at the Chennai-based Exporters Conclave.  Piyush Goyal stressed the need of maintaining the export momentum and expressed his confidence that Indian exports will be able to weather the global challenges and will far outpace export growth.  Piyush Goyal predicted that the nation’s economy will reach USD 30 trillion by 2047, with exports accounting for 25% of total output.  He predicted that India’s exports will reach USD 2 trillion by 2030.  The government has promised to resolve the problems brought up by the industry participants.


India’s WPI inflation falls to 10.7% in Sep from 12.41% in Aug 


India’s WPI inflation falls to 10.7% in Sep: Inflation based on the Wholesale Price Index(WPI) decreased to 10.70% in September. According to official figures, the WPI-based inflation rate was 12.41% in August.  High-speed diesel (HSD) saw the highest inflation rate at 65.96%. (YoY). It was followed by price increases of 44.72 percent for crude oil and natural gas and 49.79 percent for potatoes.  Food articles from the primary articles group and food products from the manufactured goods group together make up the food index, which fell from 176.0 in August 2022 to 175.2 in September 2022. Based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) food index, the inflation rate dropped from 9.93% in August 2022 to 8.08% in September 2022.

Indian Army signs MoU with 11 banks for Agniveer salary accounts


Indian Army signed MoU with 11 banks for providing banking facilities to Agniveers on enrolment.  The banks are State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, IDBI Bank, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Yes Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank, and Bandhan Bank.  The features and benefits offered under the Agniveer salary package are similar to the defense salary package.  The banks have offered soft loans to exiting Agniveers to promote and enhance their entrepreneurial skills.  From January 2025, the first batch of Agniveers will join training centers under the Agnipath Scheme.  On 14th June, the Agnipath Scheme was announced to provide recruitment of youth between the age of 17 to 21 Years for four years.  The Scheme provides provisions to retain 25 percent of them for 15 more years.  The government however extended the upper age limit of 23 years for recruitment in 2022.

YSR Lifetime Achievement Awards recipient announced


YSR lifetime achievement awards recipient: The State Formation Day, November 1, will mark the presentation of the YSR Lifetime Achievement and YSR Achievement-2022 Awards, according to the State government. Reporters in Guntur were informed that the High Power Steering Committee’s suggested awards had been authorised by the Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.  The Dr. YSR Achievement Award comes with a cash award of Rs. 5 lakh, a souvenir, and a commendation letter, while the Dr. YSR Lifetime Achievement Award comes with a cash prize of Rs. 10 lakh, a bronze figurine of Dr. YSR, and these items.  Mr. Krishna Mohan, who announced the winners, noted that all of the honorees were regular people who had made exceptional contributions to their respective fields, which included rural development, agriculture, culture, fine arts, and traditions.


Telangana’s Hyderabad honoured with AIPH ‘World Green City award 2022’


The city of Hyderabad, Telangana, has been honoured as the Grand winner of the AIPH (International Association of Horticultural Producers) World Green City Awards 2022, the most prestigious award of the Inaugural AIPH World Green City awards (2022 edition), for its initiative titled “Green Garland to the State of Telangana”.  Hyderabad also won the award under the ‘Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth’ category.

Prakash Padukone, Badminton Legend awarded with SJFI medal


Prakash Padukone awarded with SJFI medal: The Sports Journalists’ Federation of India medal (SJFI medal) for 2019 was presented to badminton legendary star Prakash Padukone during a cordial ceremony at the Karnataka State Cricket Association.  Vijay Amritraj was the inaugural recipient of the award, which was established in 2018. The COVID-19 outbreak caused a delay in the 2019 award ceremony.  In his remarks, Prakash Padukone discussed how badminton rose to become the “second most popular sport” in India.  The award was created in 2018, and Vijay Amritraj was its first winner.
The 2019 award presentation was postponed because to the COVID-19 epidemic.  Cricket legend G.R. Viswanath was among those in attendance to honour the 1980 All England winner.

Aayan Khan, the youngest player in men’s T20 World Cup 2022


UAE’s Aayan Khan, the 16-year-old all-rounder, is the youngest player to feature in the men’s T20 World Cup. He was picked in the UAE XI for the team’s first match of the T20 World Cup against the Netherlands at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong.  He impressed in the U19 World Cup earlier this year with 93 and one for 13 in UAE’s 82-run win over West Indies. Aayan was out for a seven-ball five against the Netherlands. He then bowled three overs for 15 runs and picked a wicket.  Aayan broke Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir’s record. The left-arm quick played his first T20 World Cup when he was 17 years and 55 days old.  Notably: Netherlands’ Stephan Myburgh, at 38 years and 230 days, is the oldest in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Hong Kong’s Ryan Campbell played in the 2016 World Cup when he was 44 years and 33 days old.

Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil wins gold in World Championship: Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil defeated Danillo Sollazo of Italy to win the gold medal match 17–13.  Balasaheb Patil would have thought his Olympic goal was just a tiny bit closer when he glanced above one more at the Olympic city shooting range in Cairo. Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil did this during the 10m air rifle gold medal match at the ISSF World Championships.


Women Asia Cup 2022: Indian Women’s Team Beats Sri Lanka by 8 Wickets


India defeated Sri Lanka by 8 wickets in the finals of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022. India has bagged the position for the 7th time.  Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat first. Sri Lanka made 65 runs in 20 overs losing 10 wickets. India chased the target in 8.3 overs making 71 runs with a loss of only 2 wickets. Smriti Mandhana made 51 runs not out in 25 balls.  Renuka Singh Thakur claimed three wickets against Sri Lanka while Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Sneh Rana claimed two wickets each. The final match of India vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup 2022 took place in Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Sylhet.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2022 observed on 17 October


International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed every year on October 17 globally. It is a day to raise awareness about the global issue of poverty and how it is a violation of human rights and of human dignity. The day also honours the courage of people living in poverty and their everyday struggles.  On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the World Day to Overcome Extreme Poverty and the 30th anniversary of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, this year, the UN honors people living with poverty and their daily courage and raises awareness on why global cooperation is necessary to eradicate poverty.  This year’s theme for International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is “Dignity For All in Practice”. The dignity of the human being is not only a fundamental right in itself but constitutes the basis of all other fundamental rights.


World Food Day 2022: Leave NO ONE behind


World Food Day 2022: Every year on October 16 in observance of the date the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations was established in 1945, World Food Day is marked.  The main objectives are to combat world hunger and work toward its eradication. The World Food Day 2022 will take place this year with more focus on moving forward together. Every UN member state, including India, observes the day.  The 16th of October 2022, a Sunday, will once again serve as the day for World Food Day 2022 celebrations.  The theme for World Food Day 2022 is Leave NO ONE behind.  16 and 17 october 2022
